What's the difference between MS Office and Iwork?

What's the difference between MS Office and Iwork?? I own a mac and I am college student what would you recommend me getting?? What is Iwork? and how is different than MS office? What does it mean when people say that MS Office if you need your documents to be compatible with PCs. Otherwise, iWork will suffice.What's the difference between MS Office and Iwork?
Well one of the difference is MS Office is from Microsoft, and is the widely acceptable format of most business/written documents. Iwork is from Apple and is not compatible with MS Office.

If someone says if you need your documents to be compatible with PCs get MS Office, what they mean is if you will be giving your documents (in electronic format (via email, etc)) to someone running Windows, they can open an MS Office document, even if you created them on a Mac, they won't be able to open the Iwork documents.What's the difference between MS Office and Iwork?
