How long does the latest MS Update take to install?

About a week and a half ago there was a Microsoft update which I installed. Unlike most updates which require a restart or to do nothing, this one requires a shut down. The following messages display alternately when you choose to shutdown: 1) "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will turn off automatically" 2) “Installing update 1 of 1”.

After an hour to an hour and a half the messages are still displaying and no update has completed nor has a shutdown occurred. Three times I have unplugged it and pull the battery in frustration.

My computer is very up-to-date and protected, startups minimized and temporary files deleted regularly; it is 5 years old and has 12% left on the hard drive.
